You can claim for child benefit if you are the responsible parent for bringing up a child who is under 16 years old or under 20 years old provided, they are in approved education or training.
Will both parents get child benefits?
No, only one parent get child benefit for a child. But, there is no limit on how many children you can claim child benefit.
What do you get from child benefit?
You will get an allowance paid to you for each child, every month
You will get national insurance credits (if you are not working/don’t earn enough to pay NI contributions) which will count towards state pension
Your child will get a national insurance number, without even applying and it will be mailed to you once he/she turns 16 years old
How much is the allowance?
For eldest or only child, it is £27.05/week while for additional children it is £17.90 per child. This allowance is paid monthly /every four weeks on a Monday or Tuesday into your bank account.
What if family spilts up?
For example if you have two kids and one kid stays with you while other stays with your ex, each of you can avail, £27.05/week for each child. For any additional childs, you can claim, £17.90/week.
What if families join?
If you move in with a partner who also claims Child Benefit, you get £27.05 for the eldest child in the household. You get £17.90 for any younger children.
What is threshold for child benefit in 2026?
You can’t claim child benefit if you or your partner earns over £60,000/year (adjusted net income).
Your adjusted net income is your total taxable income, which includes savings interest and dividends. It’s calculated before any Personal Allowances and less certain tax reliefs, such as pension contributions and Gift Aid.
What if you or your partner starts earning above £60000?
If you or your partner earn more than £60,000 a year, you’ll have to pay some of your Child Benefit back. If you or your partner earn £80,000 or more, you’ll have to pay all of it back.
You’ll pay back 1% of your Child Benefit for every £200 you earn over the threshold.
What visa categories or who can claim this benefit?
You can claim for child benefit if you are the responsible parent for bringing up a child who is under 16 years old or under 20 years old provided, they are in approved education or training.
Also, you can get child benefit if you are a foster parent, adopting a child or looking after someone else’s child.
Visa categories – If your visa says no access to public funds, you are not eligible for child benefit and if you still claim child benefit, it can cause issues with your settlement application.
You should have settled status either under EU settlement scheme or Indefinite Leave to Remain
If you are under EU Pre settled status, you can claim, if you are working, looking for a job or not earning enough.
If you’re moving to the UK from abroad you also need to prove that you:
- live in the UK as your main home – except for short periods, like holidays (in most cases, your child must live with you)
- have the right to reside in the UK
If you have ‘settled’ status under the EU Settlement Scheme you are eligible for Child Benefit. If you have ‘pre-settled’ status check the additional eligibility rules.
