Everybody who does a bit of financial planning, says nurses that don’t leave NHS pension while in service. Have you ever thought what will happen if you unfortunately dies while in service and enrolled in NHS pension? What are the benefits you will accrue? This article help you find out exactly that.
Benefits when a NHS Employee dies in service while enrolled in pension scheme
If you die while still an active member of the NHS Pension Scheme 2015 section (that is, still paying in and not yet retired), the scheme normally provides:
-
Lump Sum Death Benefit
If you are working as a band 5 who has joined nhs service for past one year at salary of £32703 which is your pensionable pay and unfortunately you dies after a year, your nominated person should get 2 times your salary ie around 64k£.
- In other words, 2 times your actual pensionable pay (generally based on the best of: your pensionable earnings in the last 12 months, or revalued earnings from one of the previous 10 years if higher). This is normally tax free if paid before age 75 and within HMRC limits.
Who will receive lump sum death benefit ? Your nominated person or usually it can go to your spouse/civil partner/qualifying partner or your estate.
-
Adult Dependents pension
Survivor pension on 2025 scheme is usually based on what the employee has built up at death while on his employment.
-
Children’s pension
Separate pension will be paid to children of deceased until they are 23 years of age
(for first two children, if more than two kids, pension will be equally shared). To qualify for this, they should be your biological children, adopted children or sometimes step children or dependent children.
What happens if you are a deferred member? You have contributed some money to pension but later left the pension and continued NHS Service. In this case, you will get around 2.025 x deferred annual pension in 2015 scheme.
In short, if a nurse who has enrolled in nhs pension scheme and he or she unfortunately dies whilst in service, the nominated person will get nearly double the pensionable pay of the deceased (years salary), adult dependent pension and children’s pension till the children turns 23 years of age.
